From 1940 to 1956, Gene Autry had a very popular weekly radio show on CBS, In 1947 Autry formed a production company and made westerns which were distributed by Columbia Pictures. Beginning in 1950 Gene Autry starred in and produced a television show on CBS. He retired from show business in 1964 after making about 100 films and more than 600 records. Gene Autry was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1969 and to the nashville Songwriters Hall Of Fame in 1970. During his retirement years he invsted in real estate, radio and television including buying from Republic Pictures the rights fo the films he had made for the company.
